What's fair to pay?
A fair rate helps everyone start well. Households can see what's normal before they book, and helpers can set rates they feel good about.

Evenings and nights
Babysitting: R60 to R150 an hour. Experience makes the biggest difference: someone starting out is near R60, and a very experienced nanny can be R150.
Getting home: add a transport amount so they get home safely after dark (about R100).
Staying the night: a lower hourly rate for the hours they sleep, about half.
Regular work comes with more than pay. Paid leave, public holidays and UIF are part of it, arranged between you and your helper. See the official sources.
Things that change the rate
Use the table as a starting point, then talk it through together.
Training
First aid, an ECD qualification or a driver's licence can move someone up a band.
More than one child
More children, more work. Twins or a baby plus a toddler count too.
Driving
School runs and outings in their own car? Add something for petrol.
Weekends
Saturdays and Sundays are their own time, so most people pay a little more.
Public holidays
The law has rules for public holidays. See the official sources below.
Short notice
Same-day help is a favour. A little extra is a kind thank you.
The legal minimum
Nannies are covered by South Africa's national minimum wage, and it goes up every March. Rules on UIF, leave and public holidays apply too. Please check the official sources.
Au pair rates are coming soon.
We're gathering what Hermanus households pay au pairs. Until then, a good place to start:
Start from the nanny rates
An au pair is a nanny who drives your children, so the nanny and babysitting rates are a fair starting point. Afternoons are usually paid by the hour.
Add something for petrol
School runs and lifts in their own car? Add an amount for petrol on top of the rate.
See each au pair's rates
Every au pair's day rate and hourly rate are on their profile.
Sitting rates are coming soon.
We're gathering what Hermanus households pay for house and pet sitting. Until then:
Per night, or per visit
Sitters set a rate for each night they stay over, and a rate for each pop-in visit of about 30 minutes. Both are on their profile.
Things that change the rate
More animals, pets who need medicine, a big garden or a pool to look after.
Agree it together
You agree the rate, keys and handover directly, and pay your sitter yourself.
