A first look: The first day
- Show them around yourself. Ten minutes is enough: the kitchen, the children's rooms, where things are kept.
- Offer tea or coffee and something to eat when they arrive. It eases nerves on both sides.
- If you've written down your house rules (see "Before day one"), talk through the important ones in person.
- Overlap for half an hour to an hour, so they can see how you do things, without hovering all day.
- Introduce them to your child together. Little ones often find it hard to let go at first, so stay close to begin with and step back bit by bit over the first days, as your child is ready.
- Keep your phone on you, but don't check in all the time. One message partway through is plenty.
