A first look: Setting expectations early
- Write down what the job includes before day one: what's daily (meals, the children's laundry, school pick-ups) and what's occasional. One page is enough.
- Agree the hours, including a normal end time and what happens if you run over. Even "we aim to be home by 17:00" gives them something to plan their evening around.
- If the job might grow (a second child, more hours), say so now rather than letting it creep in. It gives them a chance to plan, and makes it more likely they can make it work.
